Mexican government: 11 dead in attacks

VERACRUZ, Mexico — A group of gunmen attacked three passenger buses in Mexico’s Gulf coast state of Veracruz on Thursday, killing seven passengers in what authorities said appeared to be a violent robbery spree.
The Defense Department said in a statement that soldiers chased the five assailants and returned fire whey they were “attacked,” killing all of the gunmen. The army said the gunmen, who were carrying rifles, started the attacks in the pre-dawn hours of Thursday, killing three people who were loading vegetables into a truck in the town of El Higo, in northern Veracruz. In the same town, they tossed a grenade that killed another person.
Later, the gunmen went to a nearby highway, stopped and robbed a bus and killed two of the passengers aboard, according to the army statement.
They later stopped another bus and sprayed it with gunfire, killing four passengers. When the driver of a third bus stopped and got off to see what was happening, they killed him too.
Veracruz state government spokeswoman Gina Dominguez said that while the gunmen’s identities and cartel affiliation have not yet been established, the men killed match witness descriptions of the assailants in the bus attacks, Dominguez said.
The bloody pre-Christmas bus shootings brought up memories of the brutal murder of dozens of bus passengers whose bodies were found in mass graves in the neighboring state of Tamaulipas in April. A total of 193 bodies had been found in 26 graves, and officials say most of those were Mexican migrants heading to the United States who were kidnapped off buses and killed by the Zetas drug cartel.
In the Tamaulipas killings, the Zetas gunmen stopped and boarded buses and removed male passengers and killed them, either because they believed a rival gang was trying to send reinforcements into the region aboard buses or because they wanted to force some of the passengers to join their gang.
The buses attacked Thursday were covering local routes in northern Veracruz, though authorities did not release the names of the bus lines operating the route.
There was no immediate information on the identity of the dead bus passengers, or the four people killed in El Higo.
The area has been the scene of bloody battles between the Zetas and their former allies, the Gulf cartel.
The two gangs split in 2010.
The U.S. Consulate General in Matamoros, a Mexican border city north of where the attacks occurred, said in a statement that “several vehicles,” including the buses, were attacked, but did not specify what the other vehicles were.
The consulate urged Americans to “exercise caution” when traveling in Veracruz, and “avoid intercity road travel at night.”
While the specific area where the Thursday attacks occurred is not frequented by foreign travelers, it adjoins an area to the west known as The Huasteca that is popular among Mexican tourists and some foreigners.

Troubled Terry saves Chelsea from Tottenham defeat

John Terry shrugged off his off-field problems to save Chelsea from a damaging defeat by English Premier League rivals Tottenham on Thursday.
The England captain was named to lead his club a day after beingcharged by police for alleged racial abuse, and made a crucial goal-line clearance in time added on to secure a 1-1 draw.
Defeat would have left Chelsea five points behind their third-placed London rivals, but the result kept the battle for European Champions League places finely poised as the season nears the halfway stage.
The build-up to the match was dominated by confirmation of Terry’s February 1 court case for remarks he allegedly made to Queens Park Rangers player Anton Ferdinand.
“Since the situation he has improved,” said Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas, who called the result a “moral win.”under scrutiny
“He has grown in terms of performance. He’s a reference point for this team. It shows his character and strength and personality. His effort for the collective is extraordinary.”

Philippines After Storm

BY:www.geoawaz.com
Dec 23,2011 22:19 p.m PKT

More than 1,000 people are missing in the aftermath of a tropical storm that wreaked havoc across the southern Philippines last weekend, the country’s government said Friday, as it grappled with the mounting humanitarian crisis in the region.
A total of 1,079 people remain unaccounted for, the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said in a statement. Earlier in the week, the disaster council said it had lost count of the number of missing as it tried to assess the scale of the destruction.
The death toll from Tropical Storm Washi, which set off landslides and flash floods that swept away whole villages, has risen to 1,080, according to the council.
The United Nations said Wednesday that the storm has created “huge” humanitarian needs on the island of Mindanao, the scene of the worst devastation. It has made an appeal to raise $28 million to deal with the immediate problems in the area, with hundreds of thousands of people displaced in and around the port cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro.
“I was shocked by scale of destruction I saw,” David Carden, the head of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the Philippines told CNN on Thursday after visiting the region. He said it looked as if an “inland tsunami had struck the area.”
Around 675,000 people have been affected by the storm, the disaster council said Friday, with more than 300,000 of them being taken care of at evacuation centers at the moment.
President Benigno Aquino of the Philippines has declared a state of national calamity following the storm.
The disaster council said it estimated the cost of the damage caused by the storm at more than one billion Philippines pesos ($23 million).

Ergo, a division of German firm Munich Re, has confirmed that this happened in 2007.
Gerhard Schneibel, journalist for the media organisation Deutsche Welle, told BBC Radio 5 live: “There was plenty of alcohol and 20 prostitutes there.”

“One was for regular hostesses, the other was for prostitutes, and the white ribbon was for prostitutes reserved for top management.”

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi captured in Libyan

BY:www.geoawaz.com
Dec 21,2011 22:36 p.m PKT
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi the last remaining member of the Gaddafi family still at large in Libya, has been arrested in the southern desert and taken to the town of Zintan. He was caught while apparently attempting to flee the country.
Video footage, shown on Libyan television and distributed by the country’s transitional authority, pictured him wrapped in a brown blanket and lying on a mattress. He was holding up three heavily bandaged fingers from injuries sustained in a Nato bombing raid a month ago as he fled the town of Bani Walid the day before his father’s death.
The late Muammar Gaddafi’s heir-apparent was looking thinner and had allowed the hair to grow on his usually shaven head; he had also grown a beard. News of his capture was greeted by celebratory gunfire in Tripoli.
“This is the final chapter of the Libyan drama,” information minister Mahmoud Shammam said. “We will put him on trial in Libya and he will be judged by Libyan law for his crimes.”
Saif will be put on trial in Libya for serious crimes that carry the death penalty, Libya’s interim justice minister said on Saturday. “He has instigated others to kill, has misused public funds, threatened and instigated and even took part in recruiting and bringing in mercenaries,” Mohammed al-Alagi said. He added that the charges against Saif carried the death penalty.
The foreign secretary, William Hague, said: “I welcome the arrest of Saif al-Islam. This represents another significant step forward in the transition to a new, democratic Libya. He must now be held to account for his actions, and face trial on the charges brought against him, including by the International Criminal Court.”
Ahmed Ammar, one of Saif’s captors, said that his unit of 15 men in three vehicles, acting on a tip-off, had intercepted two cars carrying Saif and four others near the small oil town of Obari at about 1.30am on Friday.
After the fighters fired into the air and ground in order to halt the cars, they asked the identity of the travellers. The man in charge replied that he was “Abdelsalam” – meaning “servant of peace”. But the fighters quickly recognised him as Saif and seized him without a fight.
“At the beginning he was very scared. He thought we would kill him,” Ammar said. Bashir Thaelba, a Zintan commander, told reporters in the capital that Saif would be held in Zintan until there was a government – due to be formed within days – to whom he could be handed over.
Marek Marczynski of Amnesty International urged the Libyans to transfer Saif to the ICC base in the Netherlands as soon as possible. “The ICC has an arrest warrant out for him and that is the correct thing to do. He must be brought before a judge as soon as possible,” he said.
Saif, who studied at the London School of Economics, was once regarded as the reform-minded and pro-western face of the regime. He gained notoriety early in the war when he delivered a bloodthirsty 40-minute television statement to Libyans warning that the regime planned to “eradicate” its enemies.”
He was wanted on an international warrant from the ICC for crimes against humanity, including his indirect involvement in the deaths of opponents of his father’s regime, charges he rejected through an intermediary who contacted the court last month.
Following the death of his father and brother Mutassim last month, Saif, aged 39, and former intelligence chief, Abdullah Senussi were the last two senior figures to be sought by the new government.
A spokesman for the Zintan brigades, Bashir al-Tlayeb, who first announced the capture in Tripoli, said the National Transitional Council would decide where Saif would be tried. He also said that there was still no information about Senussi’s whereabouts.
An ICC spokesman stressed that Libya had a legal obligation to co-operate with the international arrest warrant. “First we have to verify if it really is him and that he’s actually been arrested this time,” Fadi El Abdallah, said. “If they decide they want to try the suspect in Libya instead of at the ICC, there’s a necessary process.”
He said the Libyans could formally request that the case be transferred, then ICC judges would make a decision. “The main criteria is that he generally be prosecuted for the same crimes,” the spokesman said. “For us there’s an obligation, a legal obligation under international law, for the national government to co-operate with the ICC.”

John Terry Will Face Racism Charges

BY:www.geoawaz.com
Dec 21,2011 22:02 p.m PKT

Dec. 21 (Bloomberg) — England soccer captain John Terry will face criminal charges after a police probe into a complaint he racially abused Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during an Oct. 23 Premier League match, prosecutors said today.
The Chelsea player is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 1, the prosecutor said today in an e-mailed statement. Terry said he will prove his innocence.
Terry is also subject of an investigation by the Football Association, which yesterday banned Liverpool forward Luis Suarez for 8 matches and fined the Uruguayan 40,000 pounds ($63,700) after finding him guilty of racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.
“I have today advised the Metropolitan Police Service that John Terry should be prosecuted for a racially aggravated public order offence following comments allegedly made during a Premier League football match,” Alison Saunders, chief crown prosecutor for London, said in the statement. “I am satisfied there is sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction and it is in the public interest to prosecute this case.”
Chelsea lost 1-0 in the game at Loftus Road. Terry said afterward that he had spoken with Ferdinand and that “it was all a misunderstanding at the time.”
Video showed Terry and Ferdinand’s exchanges during the game. The Chelsea defender said later that he was trying to explain to Ferdinand that he hadn’t used offending words toward him.
“I am disappointed with the decision to charge me and hope to be given the chance to clear my name as quickly as possible,” Terry said in a statement. “I have never aimed a racist remark at anyone and count people from all races and creeds among my closest friends. I will fight tooth and nail to prove my innocence. I have campaigned against racism and believe there is no place for it in society.”
Chelsea said it would support its captain.
“John has made it clear he denies the charge and is determined to do all he can to prove his innocence,” the west London club said on its website. “Chelsea F.C. has always been fully supportive of John in this matter and there is no question that we will continue to be so.”
Terry faces a maximum fine of 2,500 pounds ($3,919) if convicted of the offense.
